Brace yourself. We are hitting peak political season in Texas. The General Election is quickly approaching, and then shortly behind that is the legislative session in January. All the major players from both sides of the political spectrum are ramping up their rhetoric, and public education is one of the main talking points, followed by property taxes and public school funding.

Are you, your superintendent, and board members prepared? You can play a role in helping guide them.

If you have not done so already, have a serious talk with your superintendent about preparing talking points for administrators, yourself, board members, etc. Media folks and community members will be interested in knowing district stances (if your district does that sort of thing) or perhaps ask about possible impacts of political proposals. Many reporters may try to localize some of the political talking points by reaching out for reaction, etc.

This can also be another opportunity for your district and leadership to show thoughtful, calm, and factual information. We all know politicians and political ads may not represent facts fairly, nor in context.

Remember, the more everyone who is reaching your public is armed with the facts and appropriately worded guidance, the more you are all speaking with one, more powerful voice. When I say “everyone who is reaching your public” here, this can include your broader employee base. The more they know what is being done and said in their support, it can not only give them a better understanding of things but also lets them know there is a multi-level effort to support them in their service to your students.

Over the coming months, it will also be important to try to stay abreast of the changing legislative items and their potential impacts. Arm yourself with the viewpoints of all sides. Make sure the lines of communication stay open between you and your superintendent and/or cabinet regarding any stances being taken and lobbying efforts on behalf of your district and public education.

Also, enter into the middle of political season with the understanding that it can be overwhelming and have a negative impact on you, mentally. It can really wear on you if you let it. So, build in some coping mechanisms now. We often serve with our hearts, and that is one of our strengths. But it can also be an Achilles heel. Don’t take the negative political talk personally and lean on your TSPRA family members. Those regional meetings can be great for some mental resets. Or just call some of your TSPRA family and check in for a chat. With a little preparation and support, getting through peak political season can be accomplished without adding to your gray hair. You got this!
